NewsGroundswell Community Mural Project is working in partnership with the Office of the Mayor to revitalize a Department of Transportation (DOT) pedestrian underpass on 190th Street and Broadway, Washington Heights, New York. As part of our Summer Leadership Institute 2008, a team of 15 youth (age 14-21) from Washington Heights are working with artists Belle Benfield and Chris Beck to design and paint the mural at the entrance to the tunnel. The design for the mural is the result of three weeks of workshops with the artists and their team along with poets, Sandra Maria Esteves and Jane LeCroy and community consultation. The finished piece, entitled 'New York is a Roller Coaster', will show a train/rollercoaster zooming around some of the unique landmarks in Washington Heights. COMMUNITY PAINTING DAY is this Sat - AUG 2nd 10am-12pm. Groundswell is a New York based nonprofit organization dedicated to using art as a tool for social change by bringing together professional artists, community organizations, and youth to collaboratively create over 75 public art projects in communities across NYC. Over the last 12 years Groundswell has developed complex partnerships with community-based and educational institutions, serving thousands of youth and community members with whom we have worked to visually transform New York's urban landscape.
